The Cold Spring Water Department has announced that it will be performing a hydrant flush of the entire distribution system, beginning Sunday, May 21st. The hours of the flush are from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. nightly, and should be completed by the morning of Friday, May 26th. During the hours of the flush, there will be periods of little or no water pressure, and the potential for a period of discoloration each morning after the work is completed. Residents are advised to run their cold water until clear.
The purpose of the flush is twofold: first, the high flow rate of water through the pipes (in some cases >1,000 gallons per minute) scours the interior lining of the aged distribution mains. This removes the sediment and buildup that is the main cause of discoloration complaints; second, it helps assess the condition of fire hydrants in the system. This information is helpful in planning repair or replacement of these important fixtures.

The Water Department apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates the cooperation and patience of residents as they work to improve the quality of water delivered to consumer taps.
